What to Expect When You Arrive

Use this simple step-by-step guide to learn what to expect when you arrive at the hospital. Most arrivals follow a similar process. Your care team should explain each step as you go.

Step 1

Arrive at the Hospital

  • Check in at Labor & Delivery
  • A staff member will greet you and begin the check-in process
  • Let them know if you have a doula or support people with you
Step 2

Start Intake

  • A nurse brings you to a room and asks about your contractions
  • Whether your water has broken
  • Your birth plan or preferences
  • Who is supporting you
  • Any health concerns

Can we review my birth plan together?

Step 3

First Checks

  • Checking your blood pressure
  • Listening to your baby’s heartbeat
  • Monitoring contractions
  • A cervical exam if needed
  • Checking your comfort or pain level

Step 4

Your Care Team

  • Nurses
  • An OB/GYN or midwife
  • An anesthesiologist
  • The pediatric team
  • Your doula or support person
Who will be part of my care team today?

Step 5

Planning Your Care

  • What stage of labor you may be in
  • Movement and labor positions
  • Pain management options
  • When an epidural may be available
  • When interventions may be recommended
  • Who can be in the room
How do you decide when a C-section is needed?

Step 6

Labor Support

  • Move around and change positions
  • Use the shower or a birth ball
  • Work with your doula or support person
  • Your care team continues to monitor you and your baby

How will you keep me informed about what is happening?

You do not need to remember every step. This guide is here to help you feel more prepared, not to add pressure.

Your care team should explain what is happening and support you along the way. You can always ask questions, speak up, and take time to make decisions that feel right for you and your baby.
